altScreen™ is a bio-derived SPF boosting material derived from agricultural lignin and refined through altM’s proprietary process. It leverages lignin’s natural polyphenolic structure to absorb both UVA and UVB light while delivering a warm, translucent hue that enhances skin-tone pigments . At low inclusion levels of 0.5 to 2 wt%, it typically increases in-vitro SPF by 10 to 30 points, enabling formulators to reach target protection with fewer synthetic filters and without additional whitening .
It provides broad-spectrum coverage beyond 375 nm across UV-A and UV-B regions, with SPF value boosts reported above 150% without compromising PA rating . Readily miscible into the aqueous phase of sunscreens and compatible with commercial physical, chemical, and new-generation UV filters, altScreen™ enhances formulation flexibility while delivering antioxidant protection within the 0.1 to 5% range .
